Ingredients

  • 1 lb / 453.6 g Ground beef, 93% lean, for the bags
  • 1 can (15 oz) Black beans, for the bags
  • 1 small / 70 g Small onion, for the bags
  • 2 Tbsp / 16.8 g Garlic, for the bags
  • 1/4 cup / 34.2 g Taco seasoning
  • 1 medium head / 539 g Iceberg lettuce
  • 8 oz / 226.8 g Extra sharp cheddar, for the bags
  • 10 oz / 283.5 g Nacho tortilla chips
  • as needed Water, for the meat
  • not weighed Garlic powder, for the beans
  • not weighed Onion powder, for the beans
  • optional, if desired Sour cream
  • optional, if desired Salsa

Method

  1. Prep at home: Puree the small onion. The post says 1 small onion and does not give a weight. A USDA small onion is 70 g. Measure 2 tablespoons of garlic, 16.8 g. The post says 2 tablespoons of garlic and does not say minced or chopped. Keep 1 pound of 93% lean ground beef in the cooler. A pound is 453.6 g. Stir 1/4 cup of taco seasoning, 34.2 g, into a bag. The post also allows 1 packet. This card uses the quarter cup. The packet is not used.
  2. Prep at home: Cook the beef in a skillet until it is most of the way cooked through. Add the garlic and the pureed onion. Keep cooking on medium. Add the taco seasoning and water as needed. The post does not weigh that water, so it is not in the count. The post does not say to pour the fat off. Turn the heat to low when the meat is done. Cool the meat and pack it in the cooler.
  3. Prep at home: Open the 15 oz can of black beans. The post does not say to drain them. This count uses the drained can, 266 g, because the brine is not what goes in the bag. Heat the beans if you want them ready, or pack the drained beans cold. The post finishes the beans with a sprinkle of garlic powder and a sprinkle of onion powder. Neither sprinkle is weighed, so both stay out of the count. Finely slice the head of iceberg. The post says 1 head and does not give a size. A USDA medium head is 539 g. Shred the 8 oz block of extra sharp cheddar, 226.8 g. Pack the lettuce and the cheese in separate bags in the cooler. Leave the 10 one-ounce chip bags sealed. The post named a brand. This card does not. Sour cream and salsa are if desired. They stay out of the count.
  4. At camp: Warm the meat in a skillet on the camp stove, or on a grate over the fire, until the center is hot. Heat the beans the same way if they are still cold. The post says to heat the beans and prep them the way you prefer. Slice each chip bag open along the side, from the top to the bottom. The post says that gives more room to eat. Add meat and beans to the bag, shaking a little between them. Top with lettuce and cheese. Sour cream or salsa can go on at the bag if you want them. Eat from the bag with a fork. The box is 10 bags, so this card serves 10. Leftover meat keeps covered in the fridge for a few days. Reheat until the beef is hot in the center.

Nutrition

Kitchen estimate only, not lab-verified. Counted as 1 of 10 bags. The post says a 10 count box of 1 ounce bags. One bag is one serving. The beef, the beans, the onion, the garlic, the taco seasoning, the lettuce, the cheddar, and the chips are in the count. Water for the meat is as needed, so it is not in the count. The garlic powder and the onion powder are sprinkles and are not weighed, so they are not in the count. Sour cream and salsa are if desired, so they are not in the count. The beef is 1 lb, 453.6 g, raw 93% lean. The post does not say to pour the fat off, so the raw weight stays. The beans are one 15 oz can, counted drained at 266 g. The onion is a USDA small onion, 70 g. The post did not give a weight. The garlic is 2 tablespoons, 16.8 g. The taco seasoning is 1/4 cup, 34.2 g. The packet is the other option and is not used. The lettuce is a USDA medium head, 539 g. The post said 1 head and did not give a size. The cheddar is 8 oz, 226.8 g. The chips are 10 ounces, 283.5 g. The post named a brand. This card does not. Added sugars are 0. The card did not list a sweetener. About 3 g of sugars per bag sit in the lettuce, the chips, the seasoning, the onion, and the beans. About 1.1 g of those sugars are in the chips and the taco seasoning, which USDA does not split. The chips, the taco seasoning, and the cheddar are the salty parts. One bag is 625 mg sodium.

Guest diet / allergy swaps

Short kitchen notes for guests. A fuller gluten-free or dairy-free ingredient list, when we have one, is in the panels below.

  • Dairy-free

The dairy is the 8 oz of extra sharp cheddar. Leave the cheese off, or use 8 oz of a shred whose package does not list milk. The beef, the beans, the lettuce, and the chips stay. Read the chips and the taco seasoning. Some of each list milk. Sour cream is optional and stays off this plate. This is a kitchen note, not a dairy-free certification.

    • United States: Leave off the cheddar, or use a shred with no milk. Read the chips and the taco seasoning.
    • United Kingdom: The same note. The cheese is the dairy. Check the chips and the seasoning.
  • Gluten-free style

The written bags do not call for flour tortillas. Wheat, when it shows up, is in the nacho chips or the taco seasoning. Use chips and a seasoning whose packages do not list wheat, at the same weights. The cheddar stays, so this plate is not dairy-free. This is a kitchen note, not a gluten-free certification.

    • United States: Chips and taco seasoning whose packages do not list wheat. The cheddar stays, so this plate is not dairy-free.
    • United Kingdom: Chips and taco seasoning marked gluten free. The cheddar stays.
  • No beef

These bags are built on 93% lean ground beef. They are not written for another meat. A different crumble would be a different bag.

    • United States: These bags are 93% lean ground beef. They are not written for another meat.
    • United Kingdom: The same note. This is a beef bag.
