Camp Stove Taco Skillet
SaveGround beef, green pepper, pinto beans, and fire-roasted tomatoes in one skillet, finished with a Mexican cheese blend. Spices are mixed at home. Adapted from an r/camping taco skillet.

Allergen tags are cooking labels. They are not medical advice.
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp / 14 g Cooking oil
- 1 medium / 119 g Green bell pepper
- 1 small / 70 g Small onion
- 1 Tbsp / 8 g Chili powder, for the skillet
- 1 Tbsp / 6 g Cumin
- to taste Salt
- 1/2 lb / 226.8 g Ground beef
- 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) Fire-roasted diced tomatoes
- 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) Pinto beans
- 8 oz / 226.8 g Mexican cheese blend
- 2 cloves / 6 g Garlic cloves
Method
- Prep at home: Dice the green bell pepper and the small onion. Mince the 2 garlic cloves. The comment says 1 whole green bell pepper and 1 whole small onion, and it does not give a size. A USDA medium pepper is 119 g. A USDA small onion is 70 g. A garlic clove is 3 g, so 2 cloves are 6 g. Stir the chili powder and the cumin together and pack them in a small bag. The comment says the spices are pre-blended into a baggie. Salt stays out of that bag. It is to taste, so it is not in the count. Pack the ground beef, the oil, the tomato can, the bean can, and the cheese in the cooler. The ingredient list says 1/2 lb of ground beef. The method later says to add the pound of ground beef. This card uses the ingredient list, 1/2 lb, 226.8 g. The comment does not name a lean ratio. The cheese line says 1 package of Mexican cheese mix and does not give a weight. This card uses 8 oz, 226.8 g, a common shredded bag. The Cajun sausage skillet in that same comment is not in this card.
- At camp: Warm a skillet on a camp stove, or on a grate over the fire. Add the oil. Cook the onion and the bell pepper 3 to 5 minutes, until the onion is translucent. Add the garlic and cook about 1 minute more. Stir in the chili powder, the cumin, and salt to taste. The comment gives those times. It does not give a coal count.
- At camp: Add the ground beef. Cook until it is brown all the way through, about 5 minutes. The comment does not say to drain the beef, so the beef stays in the skillet. The method line that says a pound is not used. This card stays with the written 1/2 lb.
- At camp: Stir in the fire-roasted diced tomatoes and the pinto beans. Heat until the skillet is hot through. The comment does not say to drain the tomato can, so the juice stays. The bean count uses the rinsed drained-can weight, not the 15 oz net weight with liquid. Add the cheese and leave the skillet until the cheese melts. The comment does not count plates. This card uses 4 plates. Leftovers keep covered in the fridge for a few days. Reheat until the beef is hot in the center.
Nutrition
Kitchen estimate only, not lab-verified. Counted as 1 of 4 plates. The comment does not count plates. The oil, the pepper, the onion, the chili powder, the cumin, the ground beef, the tomatoes, the beans, the cheese, and the garlic are in the count. Salt is to taste, so it is not in the count. The beef is the ingredient-list 1/2 lb, 226.8 g, not the pound named in the method. The lean ratio is not in the comment. USDA 85% lean / 15% fat, raw, is the row. The comment does not say to drain the beef, so the raw weight stays. The tomatoes are a 15 oz can, 425 g, undrained. Fire-roasted is not a separate row. The beans are a 15 oz can. The comment does not say to drain them. The catalog row is rinsed drained solids, 258 g, not the 425 g net weight. The cheese is an 8 oz package. The comment did not weigh it. Cheddar is the row, because there is no Mexican blend row. Added sugars are 0. The card did not list a sweetener. About 5 g of sugars per plate sit in the tomatoes, the pepper, the onion, the cheese, and the chili powder. The cheese and the tomatoes are the salty parts. One plate is 730 mg sodium.

Guest diet / allergy swaps
Short kitchen notes for guests. A fuller gluten-free or dairy-free ingredient list, when we have one, is in the panels below.
Dairy-free
The dairy is the 8 oz cheese package on top. Leave the cheese off, or use 8 oz of a shred whose package does not list milk. The beef, the beans, the tomatoes, and the spices stay. Read the chili powder. This is a kitchen note, not a dairy-free certification.
- United States: Leave off the cheese, or use a shred with no milk. Read the chili powder.
- United Kingdom: The same note. The cheese is the dairy. Check the chili powder.
Gluten-free style
The written skillet does not call for flour. Wheat, when it shows up, is in the chili powder or the cheese blend. Use a chili powder and a cheese whose packages do not list wheat. The beef stays. Read both packages. This is a kitchen note, not a gluten-free certification.
- United States: Chili powder and cheese whose packages do not list wheat. The cheese stays, so this plate is not dairy-free.
- United Kingdom: Chili powder and cheese marked gluten free. The cheese stays.
No beef
This skillet is built on ground beef. It is not written for another meat. A different crumble would be a different plate.
- United States: This skillet is ground beef. It is not written for another meat.
- United Kingdom: The same note. This is a beef plate.
