Foil Packet Hobo Dinner
SaveGround beef, potato, onion, and carrot sealed in foil, packed at home and finished on campfire coals. Adapted from a popular r/EatCheapAndHealthy recipe.

Allergen tags are cooking labels. They are not medical advice.
Ingredients
- 1 lb / 453.6 g Ground beef
- 2 / 426 g Potatoes
- 1 / 110 g Onion
- 2 cups / 256 g Chopped carrots
- to taste Salt
- to taste Black pepper
- as needed Cooking spray
Method
- Prep at home: Dice the potatoes, the onion, and the carrots. The post says 2 potatoes, 1 onion, and roughly 2 cups of carrots, and it also allows baby carrots. This card uses chopped carrots. A USDA medium potato is 213 g, so two are 426 g. A USDA medium onion is 110 g. A cup of chopped carrot is 128 g, so 2 cups are 256 g. The post does not give a potato size or an onion size.
- Prep at home: Season the ground beef with salt and black pepper, or with another seasoning if you want one. The post says hamburger. A reply asks if that means ground beef, and the author says yes. Divide the beef into 4 patties, a quarter pound each. The post does not name a lean ratio. Divide the potatoes, onion, and carrots into 4 piles.
- Prep at home: Tear 4 sheets of foil, about 13 inches long. Spray each sheet. The post does not measure the spray, so the spray is not in the count. Set a patty in the middle of each sheet. Pile that sheet's vegetables on and around the patty. Salt and pepper go on to taste, so they are not in the count. Fold the foil and seal it. Keep the packets cold until you cook them. A seasoning packet is not in the post's list. Gravy is not in this card. The comment's peppers, sweet potato, mushrooms, cauliflower, and chicken are not in this card.
- At camp: Cook the sealed packets on hot coals, away from the flames. A 22-upvote comment on the same post says to use charcoal that way while camping, and it does not give a minute count. The post's written time is 1 hour in a 400 degree oven on a sheet pan. Open one packet and check the center of the beef and the potatoes before you eat. The beef should be cooked through, and the potatoes should be soft. The post says 4 servings. Leftovers keep covered in the fridge for a few days. Reheat until the beef is hot in the center.
Nutrition
Kitchen estimate only, not lab-verified. Counted as 1 of 4 servings: the ground beef, the potatoes, the onion, and the carrots. Salt and black pepper are to taste, so they are not in the count. The cooking spray is not measured, so it is not in the count. The post says 4 servings. The beef is 1 lb. The post said hamburger, and the author said that means ground beef. A pound is 453.6 g. The lean ratio is not in the post. USDA 85% lean / 15% fat, raw, is the row. The packets are sealed, and the post does not say to drain them, so the raw weight stays. The potatoes are 2 with no size. A USDA medium potato is 213 g, so two are 426 g. The onion is 1 with no size. A USDA medium onion is 110 g. The carrots are roughly 2 cups, diced. A cup of chopped carrot is 128 g, so 2 cups are 256 g. Baby carrots are the written alternative and are not used. Added sugars are 0. The card did not list a sweetener. About 5 g of sugars per serving sit in the carrots, the onion, and the potatoes.
