Ingredients
- 1/4 cup / 40 g Steel-cut oats
- 3/4 cup / 177.6 g Water
- 1 pinch Salt
- 1/2 tsp / 1.3 g Ground cinnamon
- optional, not weighed Maple syrup
- optional, not weighed Heavy cream
- optional, not weighed Apple
Method
- Stir 1/4 cup of steel-cut oats, 3/4 cup of water, and a pinch of salt in a pressure cooker. The author's comment gives that ratio for each serving. The comment says steel-cut oats and does not weigh the cup. A USDA branded steel-cut serving is 40 g per 1/4 cup, so that is the weight used here. A rolled-oat cup is lighter and is not this bowl. The pinch of salt is in the count. The comment gives the pressure time at 1,000 feet above sea level.
- Lock the lid. Cook on high pressure for 11 minutes. Let the pressure come down on its own. The comment says a natural release and does not time it. Do not open the cooker until the pin drops.
- The same comment stirs in about 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon per serving while the oats cook. That cinnamon is in the count. A bit of maple syrup and a bit of heavy cream go on after plating. A half apple, cut up and cooked in the pot, is the other morning the comment describes. The comment does not weigh the syrup, the cream, or the apple, so those three stay out of the count.
- This card is one bowl, the ratio the comment wrote. Eat it when the pressure has dropped and the oats are soft. Leftovers keep covered in the fridge for a few days. Reheat them with a splash of water until the oats are hot.
Nutrition
Kitchen estimate only, not lab-verified. Counted as 1 bowl. The comment gives the ratio for each serving. The oats, the water, the pinch of salt, and the cinnamon are in the count. Maple syrup, heavy cream, and the apple are optional and not weighed, so they are not in the count. The oats are 1/4 cup, 40 g. SR Legacy has no steel-cut row, so nutrients per gram are unfortified dry oats. A USDA branded steel-cut record lists 1/4 cup as 40 g. The rolled-oat cup is 81 g and is not used. The water is 3/4 cup, 177.6 g. The salt is 1 pinch, the USDA dash, 0.4 g. The cinnamon is 1/2 teaspoon, 1.3 g. Added sugars are 0. The counted bowl has no sweetener. Sugars in the oats and the cinnamon round to 0. The pinch of salt is the salty part. One bowl is 165 mg sodium.

Guest diet / allergy swaps
Short kitchen notes for guests. A fuller gluten-free or dairy-free ingredient list, when we have one, is in the panels below.
Dairy-free
The oats, the water, the salt, and the cinnamon have no milk. The heavy cream is an optional topping and it is not weighed. Leave the cream off. Maple syrup, if you use it, is not dairy. This is a kitchen note, not a dairy-free certification.
- United States: Leave off the optional cream. The oats, water, salt, and cinnamon have no milk.
- United Kingdom: The same note. Leave off the cream.
Gluten-free style
The bowl is steel-cut oats. Oats often share equipment with wheat. Use oats whose package says gluten-free. The water, the salt, and the cinnamon stay. The optional cream is still dairy. This is a kitchen note, not a gluten-free certification.
- United States: Buy oats in a box that says gluten-free. A lot of U.S. oats share equipment with wheat.
- United Kingdom: Standard porridge oats in the UK are often unlabeled. Use a box marked gluten free.
- Australia: Use oats labelled gluten free if you are avoiding gluten in this recipe. This is a shopping note, not medical advice.
No oats
This bowl is built on steel-cut oats. It is not written for another grain. A different cereal would be a different bowl.
- United States: This bowl is steel-cut oats. It is not written for another grain.
- United Kingdom: The same note. This is an oat bowl.
